Common Water Heater Problems & When to Call a Pro
No hot water on a cold morning gets noticed fast. Whether it’s a tank that quit, a pilot that won’t stay lit, or a tankless unit flashing an error code, you need it fixed today. Appliances Pro Inc. repairs gas and electric tank water heaters and tankless units across the region, and no-hot-water calls go to the front of the line from October through March.
No Hot Water
On a gas tank heater it’s usually the thermocouple or the gas control valve; on an electric one, a failed heating element or a tripped high-limit reset. Tankless units throw an error code that points straight at the cause — ignition, flow sensor, or scale.
Not Enough Hot Water or Runs Out Fast
A lower element that’s failed, a broken dip tube mixing cold into the hot outlet, or a tank half full of sediment all cut your capacity. On tankless units, hard-water scale on the heat exchanger does the same thing — a descale restores it.
Leaking, Rumbling, or Discolored Water
A leak from a valve or fitting is repairable. A leak from the tank itself is not — that’s a replacement. Rumbling and popping is sediment boiling under the element; rusty hot water points to a spent anode rod or a corroding tank.
Pilot Won’t Stay Lit or Error Codes
A pilot that dies is almost always the thermocouple or a dirty pilot assembly. Tankless error codes (Rinnai, Navien, Noritz, Rheem) usually mean ignition failure, a blocked intake or exhaust, or scale — all routine repairs when caught early.
