Common Heat Pump Problems & When to Call a Pro
Heat pumps carry most of Northern Virginia’s newer homes through winter, and when one stalls in January the backup strips can double the electric bill before you notice. Appliances Pro Inc. services air-source and ductless mini-split heat pumps across the region, and we prioritize no-heat calls from December through February when these units work hardest.
Heat Pump Blowing Cold Air in Heat Mode
Cool air in heating mode usually means the reversing valve is stuck, the system is low on refrigerant, or the outdoor unit is iced over and not defrosting. Short bursts of cool air during a defrost cycle are normal; constant cool air is not.
Outdoor Unit Frozen or Won’t Defrost
A light frost is normal. A solid block of ice means the defrost control, the defrost sensor, or the outdoor fan has failed, or the coil is starved of airflow. Running it iced up will damage the compressor, so this one is worth a same-day call.
Auxiliary Heat Running Constantly
If the thermostat shows AUX or EM HEAT most of the time, the heat pump isn’t keeping up — a failing compressor, a refrigerant leak, a bad capacitor, or a thermostat set up wrong. The electric strips will keep you warm, at three times the cost.
Noises, Short Cycling, or Won’t Turn On
Grinding or screeching is the outdoor fan motor or compressor; a loud hum with no fan is a failed capacitor. A unit that won’t start at all is often a contactor, capacitor, or control board — parts we carry on the truck.
